I have been doing this work for over twenty years now. And one of the questions I get asked more than almost anything else is this — why did my last reading feel so spot on, but the one before that felt like nothing really landed? It is a fair question, and honestly, it is one that even experienced mediums think about too.
The answer is not simple, but it is worth understanding. Because once you understand why readings vary in accuracy, you stop second-guessing yourself after a session that felt off — and you start getting so much more from the ones that feel right.

The first thing I always tell people is this — energy is not a tap you can just switch on. Spirit communication is a two-way exchange. It is not just about whether the medium is tuned in. It is about whether the conditions on both sides of the veil are right for a clear connection to happen.
Think of it like a radio signal. Some days the reception is crystal clear. Other days there is interference. That interference can come from anywhere — your own emotional state going into the reading, the energy in the room, whether the spirit you are hoping to connect with is ready and able to come through strongly on that particular day.
Energy is not a constant thing
Kevin's thoughts
In my experience, the sessions that have the clearest energy are almost always the ones where the sitter comes in with an open mind rather than a testing mindset. When someone sits down and silently challenges me to prove something, that energy creates a wall. I can feel it immediately. The spirit world can feel it too.
Tip
Before your reading, take five minutes to breathe deeply and let go of any expectations. Tell yourself — whatever comes through today is what is meant to come through. That simple shift in mindset can dramatically change the quality of what you receive.

This is something a lot of people do not realise — you, as the person receiving a reading, are an active part of the process. You are not just sitting there passively waiting to be impressed. You are energetically part of the communication loop.
When a sitter is emotionally closed off, grieving very heavily and blocking the pain rather than allowing it, or simply not ready to receive what spirit wants to say — messages can get distorted or feel vague. That is not a failure on the medium's part, and it is not a failure on your part either. It just means the timing was not quite aligned.
The role of the sitter in a reading
Kevin's thoughts
I have sat with people who were so desperate to hear from a loved one that the desperation itself was blocking the connection. Spirit does not always respond well to urgency. It is a strange thing to explain, but in my years of doing this, I have seen it over and over again. The more you let go of needing a specific outcome, the more freely the communication flows.
Tip
If you are going into a reading hoping to connect with a specific person in spirit, try writing that person a short letter before your session. Tell them what you hope to say. This opens the energetic channel in a gentle and loving way rather than a forceful one.

Not every reading is meant to blow your mind
Here is something I want you to sit with for a moment — not every reading is going to be one of those jaw-dropping, how could you possibly know that sessions. Some readings are gentler. They bring comfort rather than evidence. They plant seeds rather than deliver revelations.
After more than two decades in this work, I have come to see those quieter readings as just as valuable as the spectacular ones. Sometimes spirit just wants you to know they are still there. That is the whole message. And if you went into the reading expecting fireworks and only got a warm glow, you might walk away thinking it did not work — when actually it worked perfectly, just differently to what you expected.
Tip
After a reading, give yourself at least 24 hours before you judge whether it resonated or not. I cannot tell you how many times someone has come back to me weeks later saying something I said that did not make sense in the room suddenly clicked completely once they got home and thought it through.

The medium matters too
I am going to be honest here, because I think it is important — not every medium works in the same way, and not every medium is the right fit for every person. We all have different gifts, different strengths, different ways of receiving information from spirit.
Some mediums are strongly clairvoyant — they see images and symbols. Others are clairaudient — they hear words and names. Some work more clairsentiently, meaning they feel the emotions and physical sensations of the spirit communicating. Depending on how a medium works and how a particular spirit communicates, some combinations are going to produce clearer results than others.

Kevin's thoughts
I always tell people — if a reading did not resonate with you, please do not give up on mediumship altogether. Try a different medium. Find someone whose way of working feels right to you. The connection you are looking for absolutely exists. Sometimes it just takes finding the right channel to tune into it.
Tip
When choosing a medium, look for someone who gives you specific evidence — names, dates, personality traits, memories — rather than vague generalisations. Genuine mediumship is evidential. It should give you information that proves who is communicating, not just that someone is there.

This is perhaps the most important thing I can share with you from my twenty years of experience. Spirit does not always show up with what we want, when we want it. The spirit world operates on its own timing, and that timing does not always align with ours.
There are times when a loved one in spirit is not yet ready to communicate. There are times when the message they have for you is one you are not yet ready to hear. And there are times when the connection is simply clearer in certain conditions — certain seasons, certain emotional spaces in your own life, certain states of mind.
I have had sitters come to me years after losing someone and have the most extraordinary, detailed, emotional connection — because by that point, both sides were ready. The grief had softened enough to allow something in. That is not a coincidence. That is timing.
Spirit has its own timing
Kevin's thoughts
Spirit time is not clock time. I learned that early on and it changed everything about how I approach this work. When a reading feels like it did not fully come through, I genuinely believe it is rarely a closed door — it is more often just a not yet. Trust that.
Tip
If you have had a reading that felt incomplete or unclear, do not rush to book another one immediately. Give it some time — a few months at least. Allow the energy to settle, allow yourself to be in a different space emotionally, and then try again. You may be surprised at the difference.

An accurate reading is not about a medium telling you everything perfectly. It is about the information that comes through feeling true to you — resonating in a way that goes beyond coincidence. It is specific. It is personal. It is something that makes you catch your breath because there is no way they could have known that.
It might be a name. A memory. A personality quirk that only your family would know about. A phrase that person always used. A detail about the way they passed, or something they always wore, or a place that was important to them. That is evidence. That is what genuine mediumship looks and feels like.
And when a reading does not deliver that — when it feels general or vague or like it could apply to anyone — that is okay to acknowledge. Trust your instincts. You know when something has landed and when it has not. That discernment is healthy, and any good medium will respect it.
So what does an accurate reading actually look like?
Kevin's thoughts
The readings I feel most proud of are not always the dramatic ones. They are the ones where someone leaves feeling genuinely comforted — where they feel that the person they lost is okay, that they are still around, that love does not end. That to me is what this work is really for.

If you have ever walked away from a reading feeling confused about whether it worked or not, I hope this has helped make sense of some of that. The truth is, there are so many factors at play in any given reading — the energy of the day, where you are emotionally, how the spirit communicates, and how aligned the connection is between you and the medium you are working with.
What I know after twenty-plus years is this — spirit communication is real, it is consistent, and it is available to those who approach it with openness and patience. Not every reading will be your best reading. But the right one, at the right time, with the right conditions — that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
If you have questions about readings or want to book a session with me, I would love to hear from you.
